Introduction to White Plains, New York

White Plains is located in Westchester County. The city is situated approximately four miles from the Hudson River and less than three miles from Long Island Sound. The town of White Plains was established in 1788. The Battle of White Plains between the Continentals and the British occurred on Chatterton Hill in 1776. The Continentals retreated from the battle, but after several more clashes with the Continentals, the British abandoned the area.

Historic Sites

The Jacob Purdy House was built before 1730 and served as the headquarters of General George Washington in 1778. The house was restored and transported to its new location in 1973. The house serves as the headquarters for the White Plains Historical Society. The White Plains Armory and the Percy Grainger Home are other historic sites of interest in White Plains.

Transportation

Vacations are meant to be a time for relaxation and rejuvenation. Trying to plan a family vacation that involves a lot of expense can simply create more stress. Tour your own city. Instead of taking a trip far from home, save the travel and hotel expense and simply take a tour of your own home town, or closest large city. Look up online the visitor’s bureau for your city, and you’ll be surprised with all of the information you find there to help people find out more about the city in which they live. Some cities even have free guided tours. You can spend an entire week touring various parts of your city and surrounding communities, scoping out new and traditional eateries, shops, museums, and places you didn’t know existed. If you have a week’s worth of vacation time, use each day to discover a new community, then bivouac back at home for dinner and a good night’s rest before starting again the next day.

Go camping. Many camp grounds offer cabins with beds, kitchens, and electricity. Find such a place that offers deals during off seasons and take your family away from it all for a few days, for a little money. You can hike, play ball, have a campfire and weenie roasts at night, play board games if it’s rainy, or just simply sit and talk as a family. Take a long road trip.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid as of long road trips we took as a family to visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Stopping at a roadside rest was a particular treat, since Mom usually packed a lunch to take along. We’d sit at the picnic tables in the shade of a tree and eat lunch and enjoy the day. Road trips are highly underrated as an alternative to expensive vacations. When money is tight, you can still have a fun family vacation by simply doing things together as a family. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that everyone has a good time within the budget you have. Creating memories shouldn’t cost a lot of money.

1. New York City, New York

Easter at the White House has been a beloved tradition since the late 19th century, thanks to President Rutherford B. The event has grown considerably since then, with arts and crafts, an egg hunt, and storytelling, as well as appearances by professional athletes, Cabinet members, and other special guests.

But how can you attend such a distinguished Easter event? Go to the National Park Service to claim a free ticket on Easter Monday. Tickets are limited, though, and will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. And not everyone’s guaranteed admission; groups of five or less, with at least one child under seven years old and no more than two adults, are the only ones that stand a chance at racing their egg on the White House lawn.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana
Look forward to not one, not two, but three parades in New Orleans on Easter Sunday! Roll down Bourbon Street in a carriage or convertible in the Historic French Quarter Parade (better known as the Chris Owens Easter Parade), or see what the view’s like at the St. Charles’s Avenue Easter Parade! 4. Greece

Orthodox Greeks fast for 40 days prior to Easter and finally indulge in red eggs and a soup called “Mageritsa” on the Resurrection. On Easter Sunday, they’ll feast on lamb and Easter Monday, they’ll relax after a hectic weekend of celebration.

While sightseeing should be scheduled before or after Easter weekend (most attractions and shops are closed for the holiday), tourists can expect fireworks shows, incredible local food, and lots of decorative grandeur – all in the name of the paschal event.

5. Richmond, Virginia

6. Australia
A great choice for an Easter spent abroad is Australia, where you’ll experience a truly unique holiday. Don’t expect to see much of the Easter bunny, which is known for destroying crops, either! Instead, the Bilby (a marsupial) is the preferred paschal symbol. However, spending time with family, attending church, and Egg Knocking are the main activities this time of year – so you’ll feel right at home Down Under.

Sydney puts on the Royal Easter Show, which features animals, food, fireworks, and parades, so Sydney vacation rentals are an especially good choice for your Easter getaway.
