Planning a Cross Country Road Trip

A cross country road trip can be a fun and rewarding experience or a total drag, depending on how well you plan and prepare. Your essential road trip planning checklist should include mapping a road trip route, packing necessary items and preparing for emergencies.DODGE SPRINTER 12 PASSENGER VAN

Depending on your timeframe and your budget, a road trip is a great way to see the country while en route to visit family and friends. If you’re planning a drive cross country anytime soon, you’ll want to start planning now so you can avoid the potholes and road blocks that mark the path of poor road trip planning.

9-passenger vansDecide What You Want to See
Are you simply trying to get from one part of the country to the other, or do you want to see as many sights along the way as you can? Is speed the most important factor, or do you want to enjoy the scenery? Decide what kind of road trip you want this to be, and plan your route accordingly.

Select Your Route
As you choose your route, check out road trip maps and online resources to determine which route will give you the experience you desire. If you’re driving from New Hampshire to Florida, you may want to take major highways until you hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then wind your way through the mountains for some pretty scenery, and then hit the major highway again for speedy travel.Learn more

Services such as AAA and other travel w can give you input on avoiding construction delays and traffic. If you’re going around big cities such as Chicago or New York, but don’t plan on stopping in the city, you may want to take routes that avoid the city altogether, since traffic is almost always congested in these areas.

Map Your Way
Use an online service or AAA to map out your trip. Many online travel sites will give you detailed directions, including time estimates and mileage for every leg of the trip. Pick up local area maps as well so you have both detailed directions and general area maps. Put all of your maps in a folder to keep beside you as you drive for easy and quick access.

12-passenger vansPrepare Your Vehicle
Bring your vehicle into the auto shop for a tune and check up before you head out on a major cross country road trip. Make sure the inspector checks the following:

  • Windshield wiper blades should be soft and pliable
  • Lights all work and are aligned properly
  • Tires have even wear and are properly aligned and inflated
  • Fluid levels are adequate
  • Belts and hoses are in good condition
  • Battery connections are corrosion-free
  • Brakes are in good shape

Pack the Essentials
You’ll want to pack a few items for your family road trip to make the experience more comfortable. Include a variety of snacks (not messy items, but easy finger foods) and a cooler of beverages.

Pack a small plastic bag for trash and wet wipes and hand sanitizer. Keep a box of tissue within easy reach. Bring along non-drowsy anti-nausea medications and Pepto Bismol for stomach problems. If you are traveling with children, have them pack a bag of toys. Bring along small blankets and pillows for easy napping.

Bring Entertainment
You’ll want some entertainment along the road to help pass the time. As much as “I Spy” and license plate games can be fun, you’ll eventually tire of looking at the scenery or chatting with the people traveling with you. Consider bringing books on CD, music or DVDs for the kids.

Book Motel or Hotel Rooms Before You Go
Whatever you do, you don’t want to find yourself driving around for hours at the end of your day of travel searching for a motel with a vacant room. Plan your trip so that you know where you want to stay each night, and book your hotel or motel room ahead of time.

Since you’re just looking for a place to sleep, take advantage of cheaper rates at lesser known spots or motels that have few amenities and few tourist locations, unless you want to explore in each town as you stop.

Be Prepared for Emergencies
You’ll want to take the time to pack a small emergency kit in case you break down on the road. Make sure you include:

  • Oil
  • Radiator coolant
  • A funnel
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Flare
  • First aid kit
  • Duct tape
  • Jumper cables
  • Blanket
  • Nonperishable food
  • Bottled water

Safety Tips While On the Road

Stop every two hours. Get out and stretch, get a drink of water, use a restroom and freshen up with a splash of water on your face. You need to stay alert so you can drive safely.Keep children with you. It may be tempting to leave your sleeping child in the vehicle while you dash into the restroom, but that could easily turn into a poor decision. Inconvenient as it is, always bring your children into the restroom with you at rest areas and gas stations.

Use extra caution when driving at night. Watch out for deserted rest areas and gas stations, especially late at night. Choose your stops carefully and only use well-lit, well-frequented places, especially if you are a woman traveling alone or with children.

Don’t talk on your cell phone while driving. You’ve heard the warning before, but it’s true—talking on a cell phone while you drive is asking for an accident, especially when you’re already tired from driving a long distance. Limit calls to stops.

Affordable Family Vacation Ideas

Vacations are meant to be a time for relaxation and rejuvenation. Trying to plan a family vacation that involves a lot of expense can simply create more stress. Vacations can be affordable, fun, exciting, and relaxing if you choose one to fit within your budget and find something that everyone in your family likes. Here are some affordable family vacation ideas:DODGE SPRINTER 12 PASSENGER VAN

Tour your own city. Instead of taking a trip far from home, save the travel and hotel expense and simply take a tour of your own home town, or closest large city. Look up online the visitor’s bureau for your city, and you’ll be surprised with all of the information you find there to help people find out more about the city in which they live. Some cities even have free guided tours. You can spend an entire week touring various parts of your city and surrounding communities, scoping out new and traditional eateries, shops, museums, and places you didn’t know existed. If you have a week’s worth of vacation time, use each day to discover a new community, then bivouac back at home for dinner and a good night’s rest before starting again the next day.

Go camping. Many camp grounds offer cabins with beds, kitchens, and electricity. Find such a place that offers deals during off seasons and take your family away from it all for a few days, for a little money. You can hike, play ball, have a campfire and weenie roasts at night, play board games if it’s rainy, or just simply sit and talk as a family. 12-passenger vansLearn moreTake a long road trip.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid as of long road trips we took as a family to visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Stopping at a roadside rest was a particular treat, since Mom usually packed a lunch to take along. We’d sit at the picnic tables in the shade of a tree and eat lunch and enjoy the day. Road trips are highly underrated as an alternative to expensive vacations. When money is tight, you can still have a fun family vacation by simply doing things together as a family. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that everyone has a good time within the budget you have. Creating memories shouldn’t cost a lot of money.

Hayes, who welcomed kids and their parents on the White House lawn for an egg roll race. The event has grown considerably since then, with arts and crafts, an egg hunt, and storytelling, as well asLearn more appearances by professional athletes, Cabinet members, and other special guests.

But how can you attend such a distinguished Easter event? Go to the National Park Service to claim a free ticket on Easter Monday. Tickets are limited, though, and will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. And not everyone’s guaranteed admission; groups of five or less, with at least one child under seven years old and no more than two adults, are the only ones that stand a chance at racing their egg on the White House lawn.

Don’t miss out on the National Cherry Blossom Festival while you’re here, which lasts March 28 to April 12, 2009. Need a DC rental? Don’t worry, we’ve got dozens of Washington DC rentals for you to choose from.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana
Look forward to not one, not two, but three parades in New Orleans on Easter Sunday! Roll down Bourbon Street in a carriage or convertible in the Historic French Quarter Parade (better known as the Chris Owens Easter Parade), or see what the view’s like at the St. Charles’s Avenue Easter Parade! The conservative New Orleans Gay Easter Parade is also an annual hit. Many other weekend activities, galas, brunches, and dinners complement the festive processions. Find a charming New Orleans vacation home rental for your stay in the Big Easy.

12-passenger vans4. Greece
What better place to go for Easter than Greece, where Easter is the most anticipated religious festival of the year? It doesn’t hurt that the Mediterranean paradise is a must-see in the Spring, with wildflowers draping the ground and smaller crowds than usual.

Orthodox Greeks fast for 40 days prior to Easter and finally indulge in red eggs and a soup called “Mageritsa” on the Resurrection. On Easter Sunday, they’ll feast on lamb and Easter Monday, they’ll relax after a hectic weekend of celebration.

While sightseeing should be scheduled before or after Easter weekend (most attractions and shops are closed for the holiday), tourists can expect fireworks shows, incredible local food, and lots of decorative grandeur – all in the name of the paschal event.

Keep in mind that Easter falls on April 19th in Greece – not April 12th like in the US. Make sure to stay in a Greece vacation home during your visit.

5. Richmond, Virginia
Like New York City, Richmond has its own bonnet-filled Easter on Parade at Monument Avenue; it features kid-friendly entertainment, street vendors, and spotlights the best bonnets – worn by pets and humans alike. If you’ve got children, make sure to stop by the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens to take a picture with the Easter Bunny, listen to stories, and hunt for eggs! More family fun can be found at the Marymont Estate in the form of a maze, an egg hunt, a cake walk, Peter Rabbit, and much more.

9-passenger vans6. Australia
A great choice for an Easter spent abroad is Australia, where you’ll experience a truly unique holiday. First off, remember that it’s cool this time of year in Australia (April comes around in autumn), so don’t expect springtime temperatures. Don’t expect to see much of the Easter bunny, which is known for destroying crops, either! Instead, the Bilby (a marsupial) is the preferred paschal symbol. However, spending time with family, attending church, and Egg Knocking are the main activities this time of year – so you’ll feel right at home Down Under.

Sydney puts on the Royal Easter Show, which features animals, food, fireworks, and parades, so Sydney vacation rentals are an especially good choice for your Easter getaway.

7. Mexico
The two-week Semana Santa and Pascua, or Holy Week and Resurrection, is a huge deal in Mexico; in fact, it’s one of the most popular times for locals to go on vacation. Watch a moving, wonderfully acted Passion Play and then let loose on Easter Sunday! With a Mexico rental home on Easter, you’ll quickly get to know Mexico’s rich cultural and religious heritage. If you’re tired of dyeing eggs or eating chocolate bunnies, head south of the border for an inspired and meaningful Easter experience.

8. San Francisco, California
This year, join the fun at San Francisco’s Spring Celebration and Easter Parade on Union Street! Display your favorite bonnet, enjoy a tasty brunch at an outside café, and explore the fair, which will have pony rides, a climbing wall, and more. Choose a San Francisco condo for your California Easter.

9. Portland, Oregon
Search for candy eggs at Oregon Garden’s Easter Egg Hunt, pet a real live bunny at the Oregon Zoo’s Rabbit Romp, or dress up like a rabbit and hop on your bicycle for the Bunny on a Bike ride, which concludes with a potluck. In Portland, Easter is lots of fun and sometimes a bit strange.

10. Atlantic City, New Jersey
Of all the Easter parades, Atlantic City’s is the oldest. It will take you through New Jersey Avenue, the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and Kennedy Plaza. Afterward, watch as the best get-ups and costumes of the day get judged! An Atlantic City condo rental makes for a great vacation home base during Easter
